We've been around since 1938
But complete and thorough historic records of the company are not currently accessible. The BNT History Project is an effort to digitise stored records, link previous archival work, and ensure that the story of the company and the hundreds of people who have been part of it are not forgotten.
Putting pieces together
The project includes digitising and linking previously documented historic work like the 50 Golden Years book produced by Sonja Kinnersly in 1987, the 2013 video of BNT history written and produced by Jary Nemo and Lucinda Horrocks with Earth Wind and Sky productions, and the historic items in the Ballarat National Theatre collection held at the Centre for Goldrush Collections.
Some items that will be digitised come from private collections, some are from archives such as Trove, and some are held by BNT and other institutions.
Digitising the records makes them more accessible, provides evidence of the rich company history in the community, and reconnects the community with a past they may be unaware they have a connection to. Imagine doing your family history, searching for an ancestor's name and finding a photo of them performing theatre in the 1940s or winning a performance award in the 1980s.

Thanks for your contribution
The following BNT community members have contributed information from their private collections since the start of the BNT history project in 2025. This has given us access to previously undocumented knowledge about the company history.
Athalie Bazzani
Athalie sent us some scripts and programs from her performances with BNT
Val Sarah and Doug Sarah
Since Doug's passing in 2024, Val has very kindly passed on to us items from Doug's collection.
Marilyn Chestnut
Marilyn has performed extensively with BNT and allowed us to borrow and scan a number of programs and news articles related to her performances with BNT
Mike Zala
Mike provided a notable number of programs, as well as photos and newspaper clippings from more recent productions (1990s through to 2019) that had not yet been digitised or added to our archives.

History news
Some standout parts of our history project that we've shared as news, such as identifying special photos or videos, unique resources that have become available to us and project grants. The project is constant, so standout items will get more than just a mention in our monthly updates.

Company history on the website

Historic productions identified
Missing pieces
Because we are at the beginning of this project, there are very visible pieces of history that are missing, leaving obvious gaps in the digitised information on the website. When possible, the project will prioritise these core pieces as they will enable key valuable connections to historic information.
Website accuracy
Many historic productions on the site have typos in their names, their dates, and in the names of the people participating in them. With almost 300 productions listed, it is a slow process proofing and correcting information as errors are identified.
Board history
There is a section on the BNT website identifying board members since the inception of the company in 1938. Gaps in the information are clear for years around the 1990s and have not yet been digitised.
BNT collection
In the early 2000s a large amount of archival BNT and Victorian theatre material was passed on to the Centre for Goldrush Collections for preservation. The majority of this material is not digitised, so it is inaccessible without a visit to the Centre
Highlights
You may be interested in some of the notable pages that have been developed to showcase the history of the company, as it has been archived and recorded. Each item that is digitised builds a clearer picture of our past, and the links in this information can be collated to tell a story.
