About As Black as She's Painted

Herbert, against his late father's wish, is a theatrical producer. To deceive his sisters, an actress impersonates a 'coloured' maid.
This production included an actor in blackface, a caricature of ethnicity within the umbrella for 'Jim Crow' artistic entertainment. ‘Jim Crow’ art is anti-black, and depicts Black people with caricatures designed to dehumanise through damaging stereotypes. The term ‘Jim Crow’ comes from a theatre character developed in the 1830s by white entertainer Thomas D. Rice, which evolved from a caricature of black culture into a slur and, eventually, the name for the laws and customs that mandated racial segregation in the American South.
Images from this production have been withheld from publication on the website to respect the gravity of this depiction and to prevent the further perpetuation of harm that they may cause. Researchers can contact the company directly for access.
