In the early '30s many Jewish families decided to leave Germany. The Franks settled in Amsterdam where Anne's father soon established a successful business. But persecution followed and when the Nazi storm troopers overran Holland he decided to take his family into hiding. With the help of some of his loyal Dutch staff, who were to risk their own freedom by acting as 'protectors' to those in hiding, Mr Frank had been preparing the rear attic floors of his office and warehouse building as a refuge.
On her 13th birthday his younger daughter Anne started the journal that was to become not only the lasting record of their two years in hiding but an international best seller, a highly successful stage play, a film and a television series.
From the initial novelty and excitement of going into hiding, the diary records her feelings and emotions as the fun-loving tomboy and chatterbox tries to come to terms with the tensions and restrictions of their daily life and the problems of her unfolding womanhood. Fortunately throughout she retained her delightful sense of humour which is vividly captured in this dramatisation.
Reflecting, as it does, that human spirit of determination and pride which carried so many through those difficult years, this play is an ideal choice to commemorate the 50th anniversary of victory in Europe and Ballarat National Theatre is proud to be able to present it as part of our current season.
