It centres about an old Jewish tailor, his widowed son and granddaughter, and the memory of the son's wife, a brilliant and rare character who leaves an envelope addressed "Written for a Lady," in the care of her husband.
Usually cast in a romantic role, Peter James as the old Jew (Ben Hartz), gave a fine character sketch, probably the best piece of acting he had done to date.
Natural and gracious in a gracious part, Gwenyth Heinz, as Connie, who eventually becomes the addressee of the title, gave a sound performance, while Bob Calwell, as Sam, the lovable ne'er-do-well son of old man Hartz, was quite brilliant, playing with understanding and ease.
Sound support was given by Graeme Maddison as the smooth and faintly villanous Russell, Monica Teehan, a spinster shop-keeper. and Mabel Tuckett, a landlady.
The setting was authentic and effective and the introduction of intermittent music off-stage considerably helped the atmosphere.
