About Confusions


Anne Elliot, daughter of the snobbish Sir Walter Elliot, is a woman of deep feelings who is always forced to put everyone before herself. When she was nineteen, she fell in love with, and was engaged to, naval officer, the fearless and headstrong Captain Wentworth. The young man had no fortune, and Anne allowed herself to be persuaded to give him up.

Eight years later, Anne feels differently about how easily persuaded she was. In a cruel twist, Wentworth has returned to the neighbourhood, a rich man and still unwed. Anne has to watch as he appears indifferent to her and charming to the eligible young ladies of the neighbourhood. Her aching and dutiful heart is caught between her living with her past choices, longing for the love she has lost and the unhappiness of being with her shallow, upper-class family.

Touchingly and wittily told in a masterpiece that is also one of the most entrancing novels in the English language.

About the adaption

Each episode will feature 2-3 chapters and transport you to 19th century England to immerse you in the life, loves and longings of Anne Elliot.

Persuasion is the last novel completed by Jane Austen. It was published along with Northanger Abbey at the end of 1817, six months after her death. Of all of Jane Austen’s great and delightful novels, Persuasion is widely regarded as the most moving. It is the story of a second chance.

In Persuasion, some character dialogue was written in the third person, so easily converted to the first person for the podcast; meaning Liana’s adaptation is very faithful to the novel. Thank you Pride and Prejudice fans for letting us know that you love and want to hear this classic story. We hope you once again enjoy being transported to Austen’s world.

About the Director

Shannon trained as an actor at Federation University's Arts Academy, graduating in 2017, and has been involved with BNT since 2018. He has served as an actor, assistant director, and member of the company board in the time since.

Shannon has served as an Assistant Director twice, for Patrick White’s The Season at Sarsaparilla while studying at Federation University’s Arts Academy, and for BNT’s 2018 production of Pride and Prejudice. He also created and directed a verbatim theatre piece titled Home in 2017, which used interview responses from immigrants about their experiences before, and since, moving to Australia.

He served on the Ballarat National Theatre board from 2021-2023, and has performed several times with the company, including in Pride and Prejudice (2018), Mr Bennett’s Bride (2022), and Speaking in Tongues (2019).

Shannon has always been passionate about inclusive, positive, and accessible theatre. He strives to create a workspace wherein everyone can create as equals, and not be constrained by lack of resources.

Caesar represents Shannon's first foray into directing a full show solo, and he has great faith that the community will be able to form an amazing team to build up this show.

    I have a confession. I haven’t read Pride and Prejudice. Or seen it. I know. It’s shocking. I did have the absolute pleasure of being invited to witness this story of how James Bennet falls for Emily Gardiner, on September 25th 2022 at 2pm, with Ballarat National Theatre’s production of Mr Bennet’s Bride, and I can safely say that it was hilarious!

    Mr Bennet’s Bride, by Emma Wood, is a prequel to Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, taking place around 25 years earlier.

    Emma Wood has done a wonderful job of maintaining the Austen feel, while still using a unique voice, humour and wit within the book. Mr Bennet’s Bride first premiered in Newcastle in 2014, had record sales for its season, and has been performed in various other places; with audiences finding it hilarious, yet touching, with a little Austen charm thrown in!
