barkly square postersNow we have a new home, the various bits and pieces of the company are finding their way into the space. Today, Robyn Ashmore spent time putting up the posters from many years of productions at the company.

These posters had previously been put on display in the foyer of The Courthouse Theatre during performances so that audiences could cast their eye over them. They're a small way of connecting us to the performances and performers from previous shows and a reminder that our history is made up of the stories of hundreds of people.

It may be some time before members have an opportunity to drop in and see the space, we will share pictures and updates as the space comes together.

This coming weekend will be the first rehearsal for a show in the space and soon we will have a poster for our current production of Dust and Ruin to add to the wall.

Our upcoming podcast of Jane Austen's Persuasion has been in the news this week with a focus on the production's soundtrack.SPM 3370 2048x1175

This week's edition of The Ballarat Times features an article on the development and the recording of the soundtrack and you can get a free copy from any stands around Ballarat in many popular public locations.

The journalist who produced the article also interview the director this morning on Voice FM, discussing both our move to Barkly Square which is home to both Voice FM and The Ballarat Times, as well as even more detail regarding the podcast's soundtrack development.

Read the article online here.

The development of the soundtrack has enabled the input of Ballarat Grammar's Senior Strings Ensemble with additional performers (pictured her with a photo taken by STEVE MCDONNELL) interested in collaborating on the production. The input of these musicians has been made possible thanks to the work of Sarah Barlow who teaches sound design at Grammar.

Dust and Ruin Bump in

This weekend the cast, crew and supporters of our upcoming production of Dust and Ruin have been bumping-in to the theatre at Mount Rowan. The process of moving a production in and out of a theatre is hard work that is always lightened by many hands. It's an important area where volunteer support of community theatre shines. If you're interested in helping with the bump-out process on April 22, we would love to have you, especially if you have confidence driving with a trailer. To take part in this practical side of production, email us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Here is a photo taken by cast member Amber Jones during the first day of bump-in.

Given the date of publication, we must begin by confirming that this is NOT an April Fool's Day joke.Barkly Square

The BNT board has moved a motion to take up accommodation at Barkly Square from April to trial having a space to rehearse, meet and operate from.

Barkly Square used to be the Ballarat Secondary College Barkly Campus, located at 25 Barkly St, Ballarat East VIC 3350. The lease will commence at the start of April and the board will spend the months afterward until August, assessing if it is financially viable for us to continue utilising the venue in an ongoing capacity. We will organise a home warming of some kind for our current members once we get settled in the facility.

While it is not a theatre and not a venue for the storage of large items, it will give us space to craft props and store many items of that nature, as well as conduct workshops, rehearsals, meetings, and similar events. The board is also considering the option of members being able to hire out the space in the future, once we find our feet in the venue.

The space that we will be taking up residence in is an old classroom and one of many utilised on the site. Other tenants of the facility include The Ballarat Times, Voice FM, Ballarat East Neighbourhood House, Ballarat Men's Shed, Ballarat Regional Multicultural Council, YMCA, and more. Barkly Square hosts quarterly seasonal markets which are contributed to by all the tenants. The facility includes a cafe that was previously run by A Pot of Courage but will soon be run by 1816 Bakehouse. In the centre of the facility is a courtyard garden that is overlooked on all sides by windows from classrooms and corridors.

The venue is accessible via a ramp at the front door and ground-level entry at the side. There is ample parking out the front and a large car park at the rear.

Our room is on the upper floor which can be accessed by stairs and elevator.

We won't be set up for casual drop-ins at the site as we will be using it on an as-needed basis, but current BNT members can get in touch with the board with any inquiries.
